Frederick Chen

Frederick Chen began studying piano at age 5 with his father, Dr. Xing Chen. He has received top prizes in numerous competitions, including the Pacific Musical SocietyENKOR InternationalUnited States International MusicKAMSA InternationalBrisbane International, and the International Chopin Piano Competition in Asia. In 2025, he made his orchestral debut in Tokyo, performing Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1

Frederick currently studies with Professor Steven Spooner at the Peabody Institute as his primary teacher, with Sasha Starcevich as his secondary teacher. He has participated in master classes with Alexander Kobrin and Michelle Cann, and has studied with distinguished pedagogues including Yoheved Kaplinsky, Boris Slutsky, Victor Rosenbaum, Wei-yi Yang, John McCarthy, and Garrick Ohlsson

Beyond music, Frederick is an accomplished athlete, competing in alpine skiing in the US Far West U14 League and playing soccer in the US ECNL League. He is also an avid reader with a strong interest in science and history.
